Joan S. PALUMBO

HAMPTON - Our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Joan Dolores Scrimo Palumbo passed away into the arms of her loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. After much suffering here on Earth she was called home. Joan peacefully passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, after long and courageous battles with breast cancer and multiple myeloma. Joan was a native of Canton, Ohio; she graduated from Central Catholic High School and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She retired from Colonial Services Board in 2006 after 20 years of faithful, caring service. She enjoyed working in the mental health services caring for people's needs. Joan had a keen eye for interior design and since 2004, had enjoyed decorating and constantly moving the furniture in her beach front home. She loved and embraced raising her family throughout their travels of the USA during her husband's military career. Joan's most important life's role was that of being a wife and mother. She will be remembered most for her unconditional LOVE for her family. She lived to spoil her seven grandchildren, Katelyn, Cooper, Jacob, Gabriel, Isabel, Delaney and Caleb. Her best moments in life were spent with her soul mate, Fred. She will be deeply missed by loved ones, family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Fred J. Palumbo; and her six children, Kim Palumbo of Hampton, Va., Kelli White and her husband, Carl, of Milford, Del., Tony Palumbo of Hampton, Va., Korri Williams and her husband, Terry, of Fort Bragg, N.C., Kristen Rainey and her husband, Ben, of Norfolk, Va., and Kassia Allen and her husband, Matt, of Northville, Mich.; as well as her seven grandchildren. Joan is also survived by her brothers, Timothy Scrimo and Terrence Scrimo of Canton, Ohio. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Dolores Scrimo; and her daughter, Kristine Ann Palumbo. The family wishes to express sincere thanks/appreciation to the following departments at Sentra Careplex- ICU, ER, Oncology, Infusion, and Radiology. A special thank you to Virginia Oncology Associates, Dr. B. Booth, Miriam New, and Nurse Olivia and all staff for the medical care provided to Joan. In accordance with Joan and her husband, Fred's wishes she will be interred at the Columbarium at the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland in the spring. The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Berceuse Funeral Home, 2609 Cunningham Drive in Hampton, Va. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, 2011, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hampton, Va., by the Rev. Peter Sousa C.Ss.R.
